The Little Mermaid was painted from a photo taken on a Baltic cruise last year. For my composition, I cut out a lot of the rocks on which she was sitting, to focus on the figure and inserted a horizon line with sky in place of purely sea. My aim was to achieve the effect of a weathered bronze statue, with all its colours and hues. I left her face deliberately vague and in shadow as in the photo.
