About the Society

Woking Art Society started life in the 1920s and, apart from a short break during WW2, has been encouraging interest in the visual arts – sculpture, pottery and printing, as well as painting – ever since. To find out more about our history, please click here.

Currently the Society has over 150 members, including both practising artists (ranging from beginners to professionals) and people who just like to watch and learn alongside friendly, like-minded individuals. It is run by a committee of elected members.
What we do

• Experts demonstrating in acrylics, mixed-media, oils, pastels, watercolour and more
• Workshops run by professional artists
• Exhibitions and competitions
• Opportunities to learn by having your own work appraised by a professional
• Broadbrush newsletter published at least twice a year

Pre-Covid, the Society held monthly meetings on the first Saturday of every month at The Vyne in Knaphill, where there are excellent facilities including free parking in the public car park opposite. An admission fee – £2.00 for members and £5.00 for guests – is payable on the door and both new members and visitors are always welcome. Until further notice these meetings will be replaced by online demonstrations enabled by Zoom and, while a charge will be made for guests, these are free to view for members. Usually held at Brookwood Memorial Hall, our 2021 workshops too will be online until social distancing rules can be relaxed. Fees are payable for these full day events and, again, non-members are welcome to participate.

In a normal year, the Society’s main exhibition is held at The Lightbox in Woking, with prizes awarded for the best work as judged by a panel of independent professionals and visitors to the show. In addition, members can exhibit and sell their work in Woking town centre, when we hold ‘outdoor’ exhibitions in Mercia Walk on four Saturdays each year, usually in June and in September.

While we’re still optimistic we’ll be at the Lightbox with an exhibition open to the public from 11-23 May 2021, there are currently no firm plans for other events, although we hope to be able to stage at least some pop-up exhibitions later in the year.

Please keep an eye on the News and Exhibitions pages of this website in the coming weeks and months for the latest updates.
